Wednesday, July 22

I woke up to find that not only had Cousin Twyla and her disruptive spawn come to town a whole day early but Eric’s grandmother was on the premises as well.

“Tell me again why Eric’s grandmother can’t stay with the others in the house my mom rented,” I asked Zak as he sat on the bed beside me wearing nothing but his best I’m-sorry expression.

God, he’s adorable.

“Because Nona and my mom don’t get along at all. One of them will have to stay here, and Mom is already settled at the guesthouse, so I figured it made sense for Nona to stay here. Besides, Nona doesn’t care for Twyla’s children, and we certainly don’t want them staying with us.”

I frowned as I tried to make sense of all the Zimmerman relations. “So Eric is your cousin but Nona isn’t your grandmother?”

“Eric is the only child of my mom’s younger sister, Wanda, and her first husband, Theodore. Nona is Theodore’s mother, so she isn’t actually related to me, although she’s considered family.”

“Okay, so it was Nona’s husband who came up with the crazy will that required Eric and Cindy to be married for five years before he could collect the bulk of his inheritance? He’s obviously dead. How about Theodore? Is he still among the living?”

“No, he passed away when Eric was a child. It’s been Eric’s mother and Nona who have ruled over him for pretty much his entire life.”

“No wonder he has no idea how to have a healthy relationship with a woman. So Nona is in Ashton Falls in spite of the fact that she doesn’t get along with your mother, but Wanda, who also doesn’t get along with your mother, isn’t planning to attend.”

“As far as I know.”

“And Nona has an opinion about Twyla’s children, although she isn’t related to them either?”

“Correct. Twyla is Darlene’s sister. They both belong to my mother’s youngest brother, Joseph.”

I was definitely getting a headache. “You know, I just realized that if Darlene is your mother’s niece her last name shouldn’t be Zimmerman. Isn’t Zimmerman your father’s surname?”

“No. My biological father’s surname is Connolly. My mother kept her maiden name when she married, and when I was born she gave that name to me.”

“You certainly do have some strong women in your family.”

Zak grinned. “Tell me about it.”

I smiled. “Don’t you think it’s odd that we’re sitting here stark naked talking about your family?”

“I think it’s odd that we’re wasting time talking about my family at all.” Zak pulled me into his arms.

“You started it by bringing up Nona,” I reminded him as he kissed my neck.

“And now I’m changing the subject.” He trailed his kisses lower.
